Summer in Breck is glorious! The days are warm and sunny, but cool mountain breezes keep everyone comfortable. Wildflowers fill mountain meadows, single track trails offer mountain bike adventure, and numerous patios provide fine, al fresco dining. You can fill your days with high adventure, or simply relax and enjoy the cool air and mountain views.
Go for a Hike
Breckenridge has something for every skill level of hiker. You can summit a fourteener (one of Colorado’s famed mountains over 14,000 ft.) or take a stroll down a paved walk and everything in between. If you want a simple day hike, check out McCullough Gulch off of Highway 9 or Crystal Lakes accessed from Hoosier Pass.
Try Mountain or Road Biking
There are several bike rental shops throughout Breckenridge that offer road or mountain bikes. Single track trails can be accessed throughout town. A paved trail, ideal for road biking, runs through Breck, all the way to Frisco and even connects to Lake Dillon.
Take a Historic Walking Tour
Breckenridge was founded as a mining town and the stories are as rich as the gold that used to flow out of the mountain. Breckenridge Heritage Alliance offers tours of historic locations, from saloons, to gold mines, to famous homes. Plan an afternoon or evening to schedule one of these fascinating walking tours.
Tour a Gold Mine
Exploring a historic gold mine offers fun for the whole family. You can learn about the history, pan for gold, and experience the mountain from deep within it.
Schedule a Jeep Tour
A jeep tour can take you deep into the backcountry for views unlike any other. With a local tour guide you can experience Breckenridge’s surrounding spaces in a way you never have before. Take a tour to a remote lake or over mountain passes inaccessible to other types of vehicles.
Enjoy Patio Dining
Almost every restaurant in Breck offers patio seating. Watch the sun go down over the mountains as you enjoy fine, local fare.
Try Local Brews and Spirits
Breckenridge has both a brewery and a distillery. Take some time to try out delicious craft brews and cocktails featuring locally distilled whiskey. Broken Compass Brewing Company offers a free shuttle around Breckenridge to the tap room, so you don’t even have to worry about a designated driver.
Epic Discovery!
Plan a day to enjoy the Epic Discovery an adventure park at Peak 8. You can rock climb, play mini golf, take a ride on the mountain coaster or try out the zipline. There are activities for every age group at this high energy adventure park. Even teenagers will be entertained!
Plan for Summer
Whatever you plan, it is important to keep mountain weather in mind. Storms usually roll through in the afternoon. Plan outdoor activities in the morning so you can be safely off the peaks before any lightning strikes. Take a rest, hit the brewery, or shop on Main Street during those stormy afternoon hours. Then, enjoy a beautiful sunset on a patio. Always bring layers, a cool breeze or even prolonged cloud cover can drop the temperature significantly. Don’t forget sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. While the air is cool, the sun is intense, and the atmosphere is thinner at 9,000 ft.
There is so much to do throughout the summer in Breckenridge. Come up to the mountains to get away from the hustle and bustle and breathe some fresh, mountain air.
