How did a day after giving thanks get the name black Friday? Back in Philadephia in 1961 people used the term black friday to describe the heavy disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Not until 1975 did retailers across the rest of the country start useing the term black friday. The big retailers started useing black friday to describe a turn in sales, from out of the red and into the black. Meaning it was the start of sales increasing. So how did all of that turn into huge sales at retailers the day after thanksgiving? We arent really sure.
